    Are there any neighbourhoods within 30-40 kms of the airport with detached houses for less than $500k? Finding it difficult to believe I’ll ever be able to buy a home and not have to commute an hour or more for work.

    • @LivingInOttawa
      @LivingInOttawa 5 днів тому

      Hi there! Finding a detached house within 30-40 km of Ottawa's airport for under $500,000 is quite challenging in today's market. While there are some options in the more peripheral areas, most properties within this price range are either townhomes or require a longer commute.

    Is LrT still planned to go out to barhaven through Woodroffe?

    • @LivingInOttawa
      @LivingInOttawa 5 днів тому

      Yes, the LRT extension to Barrhaven is still planned to go through Woodroffe Avenue. The City of Ottawa has approved a plan for the extension, which includes a 10-kilometre stretch from Baseline Station to Barrhaven Town Centre. This project, part of Stage 3 of Ottawa’s LRT expansion, is estimated to cost around $3 billion. The route will include 2.4 kilometres of elevated track along Woodroffe Avenue between Baseline Station and Nepean Sportsplex. The rest of the extension will follow the existing Southwest Transitway. This plan also includes constructing new bridges over the VIA Rail tracks at Woodroffe Avenue, the Southwest Transitway, and Fallowfield Road to improve transit efficiency and safety

    I'm speaking as a 20-something so perhaps I have a different perspective on this issue than most, but I would have to say I disagree with these neighbourhoods being affordable if a requirement of living there is owning multiple vehicles. I think that families truly on a budget would be better spending more on living somewhere transit/walking friendly in order to save over $10k/year+ on each vehicle they can live without in exchange for the higher housing costs. I would love to see a video from you highlighting the easiest areas to live car-free or car-light in Ottawa outside of the downtown core if this isn't something you have explored already :)

    • @LivingInOttawa
      @LivingInOttawa 5 днів тому

      Hi @Flamingo4280, thanks for sharing your perspective! You raise a good point about the cost of vehicle ownership and the benefits of living in transit/walking-friendly areas. In Ottawa, properties closer to shopping, amenities, and conveniences do tend to be more expensive. I'll definitely consider your suggestion about highlighting the easiest areas to live car-free or car-light outside the downtown core in a future video. Thanks again for the great suggestion!

    Joan here. I basically grew up in Ottawa, though it is many years ago now. As a teen, I couldn't wait to leave but as I grew older I felt more and more drawn back to the city and found myself missing it a lot. It has much in the way of beauty and history. I have been back to visit a number of times over these many years. My last visit was 2015 and I elected to do a walking tour of some of the old neighbourhoods I grew up in including Gilmour and Florence Streets and Third Ave. All the apartment buildings we lived in are long gone but I still had many memories to accompany me. My stomping grounds in younger times included the Glebe, Somerset, Bronson, Byward Market (though it was truly a market then and not a "destination") and anywhere along the canal and areas around Parliament Hill and later Hogsback. Whatever was in walking distance of home and school. I talked to some people on Florence St when I was back in 2015 and was astounded at the price the homes were going for, particularly as these were neighbourhoods of relative poverty at the time I lived there. I know I shouldn't be surprised as I have seen this in every community I have lived in over the years, but it still is mind-boggling and I couldn't shake the dissonance between the past and the present. It was a city on our list for retirement, however the costs and distance from friends and family precluded this option. If we were to have done it though I would have gone to my old neighbourhoods including the Glebe and Florence St as they have retained some of the "oldness" that I am drawn to and really appreciate now that I have "oldness" myself. Thank you for the little jaunt down memory lane.

    Also born and raised in Ottawa. Nightlife truly sucks. Who is so insane to pay $140 to go at the blues festival? Or the balloon festival for same price. To make me happy, I need to leave this city many times a year to enjoy better weather and much cheaper outings. Shameful!!!

      Nightlife is lacking for sure. But a great location of home base to run to Toronto and Montreal for fun and special events but Ottawa can be great for certain people and families. If you are looking for dance clubs and nightlife not the right city for you. If you are looking for outdoor activity, quality of life, safety, balanced life - then Ottawa is a good option.

    Thinking about moving to Ottawa raises the questions which I am prettykeen about: housing situat with fair prices for condo, low, high level, homeless around? Public transport network develop? School rates throughout suburbs? Save neighborhoods? Opportunity to get family doctor without waiting years? Pay parking around the city? Labour market for high skilled trades/ engineers or project managers but the real situation? Like how many applicants for average indeed job posting. Would be great to get real info, without water and Wikipedia information. Thank you.
